Xbox Controller with Standard USB Plug
Recently I found an old Xbox in my attic and to my disappointment the controllers no longer worked. After tinkering around with the controller wire I found out that the inside of the cable was frayed. It is a well known fact the Xbox360′s controllers work via USB however it is a less known fact that the original Xbox’s controllers work on “roughly” the same protocol. By using an old USB cable and a female USB port lying around, I was able to use my controller once again.
The one disadvantage of using a standard USB cable is the controllers will no longer support vibration. This is because a standard USB cable has 4 wires(5V,D+.D-,GND) while the Xbox controller has an extra wire(yellow) with 12V across it for the vibration motors. In my controllers I just took the motors out since they were useless and the controller would then be lighter as the motors take up considerable weight.
